Hybrid New Era Soup Plate Malao

Malao was an ancient Horn of Africa port where spice routes from Arabia, monsoon traders from India, and Mediterranean merchants all converged — a city the ancient world depended on, now recorded only in a first-century navigation manual. CTRLZAK Studio pulled it back into view for Seletti's Hybrid New Era: a deep bone porcelain soup plate split along a vivid coloured seam, Eastern florals arguing with European heraldic ornament across a single, deliberate divide.

That seam is not decoration — it is the collection's central act. Chinoiserie cloud-bands and peonies face baroque cartouches head-on, neither side yielding. The soup plate's generous form turns the cultural collision into something you eat around, course by course, without resolving it.

Dubai — itself a city built at the crossing of ancient trade worlds — is a natural home for Hybrid New Era designer Italian porcelain. Pair Malao with Lothal (Indus Valley) or Mitla (Zapotec Mexico) and you have a table that looks like nothing else in the Gulf.
