Fine vitrified porcelain with a hard, glazed, food-safe surface that resists staining and odour. Plain pieces tolerate everyday use and the microwave, but any piece with gold, platinum or metallic detailing must never go in the microwave, as the trim sparks and can craze or crack. Not for the oven or freezer, and it can crack under sudden thermal shock.

Care: Hand-wash any gilded, metallic or hand-painted piece in warm water with mild soap and a soft sponge, drying immediately to protect the finish. Plain, undecorated pieces may go in the dishwasher on a gentle or top-rack cycle with mild detergent. Wash promptly after use rather than leaving acidic or strongly coloured foods in contact.

Avoid: Microwaving gold or metallic-trimmed pieces; the oven, freezer and tumble dryer; sudden temperature changes such as pouring boiling liquid into a cold cup; abrasive pads, steel wool and undiluted bleach, which scratch the glaze and erode decoration; and knocks or drops, since porcelain can chip or break.

Suitable for: Tea and coffee service, formal and everyday dining, plated desserts and considered table settings, and gifting.
