Durable vitrified porcelain with a hard, glazed, food-safe surface that resists staining and odour. Plain, undecorated porcelain tolerates everyday use and the microwave, while pieces with gold, platinum, metallic or hand-painted decoration must be hand-washed and never microwaved; porcelain is not for the oven or freezer and can crack under sudden thermal shock.

Care: Wash plain pieces by hand or in the dishwasher on a gentle or top-rack cycle with mild detergent; hand-wash decorated pieces in warm water with mild soap and a soft sponge, dry immediately, and wash promptly after acidic or strongly coloured foods.

Avoid: Microwaving any metallic-decorated piece; the oven and freezer; sudden temperature changes such as boiling liquid in a cold piece; abrasive pads, steel wool, scouring powders, undiluted bleach, knocks and drops.
